The Rainforest Layers
Emergent Layer
The tallest trees are in the emergent layer. Growing up to 200 feet above the ground. Lots of the trees are broad leaved, hardwood evergreens. The animals up here are eagles, monkeys, bats, birds and butterflies. Canopy Layer This layer is the main and most important layer. It forms a roof over the understory and forest floor. It is like a maze because there are so many leaves and branches. There are lots of animals here due to the large supply of food. Some of them are snakes, toucans and treefrogs. Understory Layer The plants here have to grow big leaves to reach sunlight because there is not much sun in this area. Lots of animals live here. Some are jaguars, red-eyed treefrogs and leopards. There are also lots of insects here. Forest Floor Very little vegetation grows here because it is very dark. The leaves on the forest floor decay very quickly here because of the lack of sunlight. A leaf will decay in about 6 weeks but would take a year in a regular climate. Giant anteaters live down here. |

Jaguars look like leopards but have a stronger build. They act more like tigers then leopards.
The jaguar has a unusual killing method. It bites between the ears of its prey crushing the skull.
The jaguar is near threatened. At least it is better then the samaritan tiger!
